Research Associate I or II, Rational Strain Engineering

We are seeking a talented Research Associate (level determined by candidate experience), Rational Strain Engineering for our Industrial Products Division (IPD) located in South San Francisco. The candidate will have strong molecular/microbiology biology skills and familiarity with micro-cultivation of microorganisms. Appropriate candidates will have strong background in synthetic biology and microbiology and thrive in a dynamic team environment.

  • Be a key member of a team that will support IPD’s metabolic engineering and strain development platforms encompassing a broad array of microbial hosts, in particular, but not necessarily limited to gram negative/positive bacteria and yeast.
  • Execute high throughput DNA and strain construction in a timely manner with high fidelity.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA sub-cloning, various mutagenesis methods, genome editing methods, and other advanced technologies in support of research projects.
  • Design and perform experiments for strain/metabolic pathway modification and optimization.
  • Suggest and implement improvements and troubleshooting strategies; think critically and take initiative.
  • Work in partnership with other IPD teams (assay development and screening, analytical, and fermentation) to advance projects.
  • Be a conscientious laboratory citizen, adhere to EH&S standards use knowledge of laboratory procedures to advance projects under rapidly shifting priorities and timelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • BS in molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, chemical engineering or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • A proven track record of accomplishments and timely delivery on goals.
  • Experience in the following areas preferred: Strain/metabolic engineering in prokaryotic or eukaryotic microorganisms.
  • A strong desire to grow as a scientific researcher, learn new techniques and adopt new technologies.
  • Flexible to change and strives for continual improvement of themselves and the team.
  • Capable of high performance in independent work as well as in team setting.
  • Well organized and capable of clear communication in both oral and written forms.
